My name is Debra Chantry. I’ve been a business coach for several years at the Icehouse – one of the top 10 startup incubators in the world & also in my own coaching business, Ventell. I am a successful business owner and strategist recognised by NEXT Magazine as one of the top 6 businesswomen in NZ.
It hasn’t always been this way.
10 years ago I was running a web development agency. I thought I was running it successfully … until the day I called the receivers in.
I watched them change the locks and saw 14 people put out of jobs. My heart broke. I thought I was a complete and utter failure. It was the worst time of my life.
As I waited in line at WINZ in my pinstriped suit, tears streaming down my face, a dream came to me … a dream that no business owner would ever have to go through what I’d just been through.
I realised that I’d got myself into this situation because I’d tried to go it alone. I didn’t have anyone in a similar position to bounce ideas off, and by the time things got bad I was too ashamed to ask for help.
As I retrained as a business coach and started running advisory boards for companies, I saw so many business owners going through the exact same thing – isolation, loneliness, a lack of support.
Kiwi businesses are the backbone of New Zealand. We hold up the economy and create jobs for generations of kiwis. But unless you’re running a young, high-tech startup, the support networks and funding opportunities just don’t exist.
I wanted to find a way to bring entrepreneurs together to share their expertise and lift each other up. As so, The Common was born.
The Common is not just a physical space for work and play – it’s a nurturing business community made up of people on a mission to change the world. When you join this unique business club, you’ll discover a space where you belong and can get the support you need, both professionally and personally.
My passion is to grow New Zealand through growing and supporting kiwi business.
Our first premises are located right in the heart of Cosmopolitan Parnell, amidst the movers and shakers of the Auckland startup community. With the help of our business partners and strategic alliances in the entrepreneurial space, we’ll be launching new hubs across NZ by 2018.
Our aim is to help 10,000 extraordinary kiwi business entrepreneurs to improve their professional and personal lives through our unique community.
